North Liberty, Iowa: One of the Midwest’s Best Places to Call Home

May 11, 2026

From a brand-new splash pad to nationally recognized schools, this fast-growing city has everything your family needs to thrive.

If you’ve been searching for a community where your family can truly grow — where excellent schools, green space, and genuine small-town hospitality coexist with big-city amenities, North Liberty, Iowa deserves a long, hard look.

Tucked between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids along Interstate 380 in Johnson County, North Liberty has transformed from a small farming village of 190 residents into a thriving city of more than 21,000 in just a few decades. According to the U.S. Census, North Liberty grew a staggering 289% since 2000, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in Iowa.¹ That growth didn’t happen by accident. People come here for opportunity, stay for community, and raise their families here because the city keeps investing in the things that matter most.

Here’s what makes North Liberty, Iowa one of the Midwest’s most compelling places to put down roots.

A Brand-New Splash Pad at Centennial Park

North Liberty’s 40-acre Centennial Park is in the midst of a transformational, multi-phase expansion and one of the most-anticipated additions is a brand-new splash pad. Part of a $16 million vision that also includes an indoor event center, outdoor amphitheater, open-air pavilion, and honor garden, the splash pad and play features are designed to give families a free, accessible water destination right in their own backyard.²

Phase 1 — the Hy-Vee Center indoor event hall and outdoor amphitheater — was completed in fall 2025, with a ribbon cutting on October 21, 2025.² The project is funded through American Rescue Plan Act dollars, state and federal grants, and community donations, with the city contributing $6.5 million of its own funds.³ When the full project is complete, Centennial Park will be a regional gathering place unlike anything else in the Iowa City Corridor.

Even now, the park hosts beloved annual events like Blues & BBQ every July, free outdoor concerts, kite festivals, and seasonal celebrations, all at no cost to families.

A Library That’s the Heart of the Community

The North Liberty Community Library isn’t just a place to check out books, it’s one of the most active gathering spaces in town. Housed inside the Community Center at 520 W. Cherry Street, the library serves all ages with a rich calendar of free programming.

Summer months bring Swimming Storytime, the Summer Reading Program kick-off party, teen BookTok Bingo nights, fishing gear checkouts, and ONE nature exploration packs. Fall programming includes the Halloween Trail, Kids Vote, a Tiny Art Show reception, and Nerf gun wars after hours. Winter adds Breakfast with Santa, a Holiday Cookie Walk, and a life-sized Candy Land experience.⁴

The library also offers ongoing resources like a StoryWalk, board game checkouts, and a costume closet every September, all free. As Library Director Jennie Garner has said: “I feel fortunate that we’re so supportive as a city.”⁵

An Aquatic Center Worth Jumping Into

North Liberty’s aquatic facility features both indoor and outdoor pools, making it a year-round resource for swimmers of all ages. The outdoor pool is open during summer months and features two large water slides, a large splash bucket play feature, and smaller interactive water play elements.⁶

Swim lessons are offered weekday mornings year-round for all skill levels, from infant water acclimation to advanced swimmer progressions. Summer drop-ins begin at 1 p.m. daily, and group or private lessons are available by appointment.⁶ Water fitness classes, including Aqua Zumba and Water Resistance, round out the offering. The pool is free for North Liberty residents as part of their Community Center membership, making it one of the most accessible aquatic programs in

A Rec Center Built for Every Body

The North Liberty Community Center is more than a gym, it’s a full-service recreational hub that serves infants through seniors. The facility includes two full-size gymnasiums, a 1/8-mile indoor walking track, weight and cardio machines, indoor and outdoor pools, the Gerdin Conference Center, meeting rooms, a kitchen, and the North Liberty Library, all under one roof.⁷

Open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Community Center makes it easy to build a routine that works for your schedule. Free gym nights are offered twice a month, and financial assistance is available for residents who need it.

The recreation department publishes a seasonal activity guide three times per year with classes and camps for every age group, from Tippie Toes Dance for toddlers to adult pickleball leagues, yoga, hapkido, and senior Euchre Club nights.⁸

25 Miles of Trails Through Every Season

In North Liberty, trails aren’t just for recreation, they’re the connective tissue of the community. The city maintains approximately 25 miles of multi-use trails, side paths, and connections linking neighborhoods, parks, and civic spaces throughout town.⁹

The trail system began in 1998 and expanded significantly in 2006, eventually connecting to Coralville’s trail network for a seamless multi-city path. The city’s parks team even clears the trail system in winter, a meaningful commitment that keeps routes usable through all four Iowa seasons.¹⁰

Along the way, users pass through Penn Meadows Park (a 37-acre family hub with sports fields, tennis, pickleball, and shelters), Liberty Centre Pond (stocked with bass and bluegill for fishing), Centennial Park, and the newly added Old Town Park (2025).⁹ Dog owners will also love Red Fern Dog Park — a 5.1-acre off-leash park with separate sections for small and large dogs, interior trails, shelters, and parking.¹¹

A Community Built for the Long Haul

Beyond the amenities, what draws people to North Liberty and keeps them here is something harder to quantify: a genuine sense of belonging. The city’s median age of just 31.7 years reflects a community of young families planting roots.¹⁶ With a median household income of $102,102 and a homeownership rate of 66.9%, it’s a community where people aren’t just passing through, they’re investing.¹⁶˒¹⁷

North Liberty also sits just off I-380, roughly 8 miles from downtown Iowa City and the University of Iowa, home to one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, which is expanding services directly into North Liberty.⁵ Cedar Rapids is a short drive north, and the Eastern Iowa Airport connects travelers to major U.S. hubs. Major employers including Heartland Express, GEICO, and Centro have offices here, and Kirkwood Community College is less than a mile away.⁵

In April 2026, the North Liberty Police Department earned formal accreditation through the Iowa Law Enforcement Accreditation Program, a milestone reflecting the department’s commitment to professional, community-centered policing.¹⁸
