April is Fair Housing Month — and at Lepic-Kroeger, REALTORS®, it’s one of the most meaningful times of year for our team. We’ve built our reputation in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, and the surrounding communities on a simple belief: that every person deserves a fair shot at finding a place to call home. It’s not just a legal obligation. It’s the heart of who we are.
Our tagline — the way home — isn’t just a phrase. It’s a promise. And Fair Housing Month is our opportunity to renew that promise to every buyer, seller, renter, and family we serve.

What Is Fair Housing Month — and Why It Matters
Every April, the real estate industry and housing advocates across the country come together to commemorate the Fair Housing Act of 1968, one of the most important pieces of civil rights legislation in American history. Signed into law on April 11, 1968 — just days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — the Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability.
More than 55 years later, the work isn’t finished. Fair housing is not a relic of the past — it’s an active, ongoing commitment that every REALTOR® takes seriously through the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) ACT! program, a fair housing action plan dedicated to accountability, culture change, and creating pathways to equal homeownership for all.
Here in Iowa, that commitment is personal. Our communities in Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, Cedar Rapids, Marion, and across the Corridor are diverse, growing, and full of families with big dreams. At Lepic-Kroeger, REALTORS®, we believe every one of those families deserves the way home.

Fair Housing Rights: What Every Iowa Home Buyer and Renter Should Know
Whether you’re exploring Iowa City real estate for the first time or searching for Cedar Rapids homes for sale as a growing family, you have rights — and we want you to know them.
Under the Fair Housing Act, it is illegal for a housing provider, lender, or real estate professional to:
- Refuse to sell or rent a home based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or disability
- Misrepresent availability of a home (telling one buyer a property is “gone” while holding it for another)
- Steer buyers or renters toward or away from certain neighborhoods based on protected characteristics
- Discriminate in lending through unequal loan terms, appraisal manipulation, or denial of financing
- Retaliate against anyone who exercises their fair housing rights
Iowa also extends fair housing protections beyond the federal minimums. The Iowa Civil Rights Act adds protections based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and age, ensuring broader coverage for Iowans.
If you ever feel your fair housing rights have been violated, you can file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or the Iowa Civil Rights Commission.
Our Commitment: The Way Home Is for Everyone
At Lepic-Kroeger, REALTORS®, fair housing isn’t something we practice in April and set aside in May. It is woven into every transaction, every conversation, and every showing — 365 days a year.
Our agents are trained on fair housing best practices and the ethical obligations outlined in the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, which goes above and beyond the law to ensure that every client is treated with dignity, professionalism, and equal care. We believe that a strong real estate community starts with trust — and trust is built when every person knows they will be served fairly.
For our Iowa City and Cedar Rapids clients, that means:
Equal Access, Always. Every buyer and renter who walks through our door — or calls our office, or submits an inquiry online — receives the same high-quality service, the same access to listings, and the same commitment to finding their perfect home.
Knowledgeable Guidance. Navigating the home buying or selling process can be complex. Our agents are here to make sure you understand your rights, the local market, and every step of the journey — no matter your background, budget, or circumstances.
Community Investment. We are proud to be locally rooted in the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids communities. We live here, work here, and raise our families here. A community where everyone has a fair chance to find housing is a stronger community for all of us.
Fair Housing and the Iowa City & Cedar Rapids Market
The Eastern Iowa housing market continues to be one of the most stable and welcoming in the Midwest. Whether you’re looking for a starter home near the University of Iowa campus, a family home in a Cedar Rapids neighborhood like Hiawatha or Robins, or a new build in fast-growing communities like North Liberty, Tiffin, or Marion — there is something here for everyone.
That diversity of options is one of the things we love most about this region. Iowa City’s vibrant culture, Cedar Rapids’ growing economy, and the smaller communities that dot the Corridor all offer unique lifestyles and real value for homebuyers at every stage of life.
Fair housing ensures that the doors to all of these communities are open equally. At Lepic-Kroeger, REALTORS®, we’re committed to making sure they stay that way.
