Ely History
Ely was officially platted in 1872 and named after John F. Ely, a treasurer for the Burlington, Cedar Rapids, and Northern Railway. Originally a key shipping point for grain and livestock due to the new railroad line, the town quickly attracted a vibrant community of Czech immigrants who helped shape its early culture.
Today, Ely honors this rich history through the preservation of the Dows Street Historic District while evolving into one of the most desirable residential communities in the Corridor.
